For babies, most of their time spend on sleeping and feeding on mothers. As they grow, the sleeping time will gradually decrease. Sometimes, they might seem to have problems sleeping such as unable to sleep soundly or having nightmares. These can be caused by many reasons like hunger, irritability, stomachache, toothache, sick, willing to play, or just want to be held.
Nightmare is a stage of waking up in the middle of the night because of fear, stress, or anxiety. The baby can remember their dreams. So, after a nightmare, it’s difficult to go back to sleep. Nightmares won’t cause violent reactions. There might panic or scare after waking.
Sleep terrors or night terrors are similar to the nightmares. However, they can cause unaware violent reactions or behaviors such as hard breathing, yelling, screaming, or limps twitching. Night terror is a common symptom generally found but if it happens often, or the behaviors or reactions are harmful, seeing a doctor is recommended.
Nightmares can happen at all ages while night terrors found in young children and teenagers more often. If your children have problems sleeping, consult a doctor to find the causes to avoid harmful behaviors like sleepwalking or injury.
