When your baby has wet eyes or sticky eyes even when they haven’t cried that much, any new moms could get anxious. Let’s see why and how to deal with this problem.
The causes of baby's wet and sticky eyes
Baby with swollen eyelids, red eyes, or has sticky eyes might be caused by "eye inflammation in infants." This symptom usually found in newborns during their first month caused by bacterial or virus infection. The common infections that, if it becomes severe, can cause blindness are gonorrhea and pseudo-gonorrhea from mother’s vagina. This disease can be prevented in many ways such as preventing sexually transmitted infections and give the eye drops to the newborns immediately to prevent the infection causing conjunctivitis.
Characteristic of sticky eye in babies
The baby may have a brimming tear, wet eyes, and a lot of gum in their eyes. It can occur with one or both eyes. This condition is often found in newborns with their nasolacrimal duct blocked during the first few months. Conjunctivitis might also be seen along with yellowish gum and sometimes, if a lot enough, it can become pus in the eye’s corner.
Primary treatment
If your baby has symptoms that can be considered as may have blocked nasolacrimal duct. Primarily, clean the gum off your baby’s eyes with cotton wool or a clean cloth soaked with salt water or boil water left to be cool.
Will drop the baby’s eyes with breast milk help?
You should not drop breast milk into your baby’s infectious eyes since it might cause more infection.
If anything is wrong with the baby’s eyes, you should not buy an eye drop on your own. Go to see an ophthalmologist to have a proper diagnosis because there are many reasons for wet eyes and sticky eyes such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, or something goes into the eyes.
