Bloating is a common symptom often found in children. Mostly, it indicates indigestion, abdominal discomfort, the air in the stomach, or too much gas in the stomach and intestines.
The causes of bloating
- Disease in the digestive tract
- Other causes such as autoimmune system, or thyroid
The causes of bloating by age
- Infants and young children. One of the reasons is that their gastrointestinal function is not completed.
- Use inappropriate feeding bottles.
- The baby sucks on the breast too long.
- Air gets into the baby’s stomach while feeding.
- Haven’t let the baby belch after feeding.
- The baby has colic.
- Grown children. In acute symptoms can occur from various causes.
- May occur after eat or drink carbonated drink too much.
- Children eat a large amount of food in a short time.
- In chronic symptoms, the causes may be from Lactase enzyme deficiency or Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
How to care for your baby when bloating
- Adjust the right feeding position.
- After finish feeding, place the baby on the shoulder or sit on the lap to have him/her belch.
- Raise the baby’s feet to imitate biking.
- Massage the baby's belly to reduce bloating.
Treatment depends on the causes. Sometimes, additional diagnostics may require. In infants, the symptoms sometimes get better when the baby is older. If there’re any abnormal symptoms, please consult with the doctor.
