Sleeping is a crucial activity for the brain and your child’s development. Sleeping in the right time of the day can also be extremely beneficial for the body, mind and brain, but sometimes it is hard to convince your little one to get some shut-eye, especially if your child isn’t feeling comfortable or is old enough to say no.
Encouraging your child to sleep is not that difficult. The key word is “comfort”. So, what can you do to make your child comfortable? Babi Mild has seven tips for you.
1. Music: Soothing sound and familiar music, such as the songs he has listened to from birth or since he was in your womb. Try singing relaxing songs to your child before he goes to bed, or you can read a story or talk to him until he falls asleep. For smaller children, holding him close to your chest while singing can also make him fall asleep easily.
2. Swaddling: Children like being in the right temperature. Fan and air-conditioner, or even winter breeze, can make your child feel too cold, so don’t forget to put a soft blanket on him or swaddle him so that he feels warm like when he is in your arms.
3. Belly rub: There’s nothing like a mother’s touch. He will feel safe and comfortable when you touch him rhythmically, such as a belly rub, a back rub, or patting on the bottom. Doing that while singing to him will make him feel more relaxed and sleep better.
4. Dim the lights: Bright light can be distracting when your child is trying to sleep, so he might end up not sleeping well or waking up in the middle of the night. Interrupted sleep can affect his brain development and make him feel tired the next day. Therefore, your child’s best room should be just dimly lit so that he can sleep comfortably without interruption.
5. Stick to the schedule: Children’s daily life is quite a routine, with meals and naps being their main activities. Therefore, it is advised to have a schedule and stick to it so that his body learns to adjust. If your child goes to bed at the same time every day, he will feel sleepy when that time of the day rolls around, and wants to go to bed. This way, he can sleep well without feeling forced.
6. Sleep on a full stomach: Just like adults, children also sleep better on a full stomach. Having a small meal before bedtime can help the child feel sleepy and sleep better, without waking up hungry in the middle of the night. Before bedtime, give him some milk or snacks around 30-60 minutes before he goes to bed, so give the stomach some time to digest the food. This will help your child sleep comfortably without bloating and stomach ache.
7. Bath and massage: Nothing beats the just-out-of-the-bath feeling. Before bedtime, give him a warm bath with a drop of baby oil for moisturization, and give him a little massage. Use a soft towel to dry him and choose soft, loose-fitting clothes so that he sleeps comfortably throughout the night.
